The Sun Belt will go to divisional play in 2018.

The Sun Belt is joining the divisional play club. Starting in 2018, the conference will divide ten member schools between two five-member divisions, creatively named "East" and "West." It will also hold its first conference championship game for the 2018 season.

The Sun Belt East division will consist of Appalachian State, Costal Carolina, Georgia Southern Georgia State, and Troy.

The Sun Belt West division will consist of Arkansas State, Louisiana-Lafayette, Louisiana-Monroe, South Alabama, and Texas State.

Two other member schools, Idaho and New Mexico State are scheduled to leave the conference after the 2017 season.

The site for Sun Belt conference championship will determined by which of the two division winners have the higher College Football Playoff ranking. If neither team in ranked in the CFP, then the conference will turn to what's described as "a formula based on six computer ratings that were used in the old Bowl Championship Series standings" to decide which team gets homefield advantage.

Appalachian St. and Arkansas St. split the conference title in 2015.
