USA Today is reporting that former Nebraska running back Lawrence Phillips was found dead in his cell inside Kern Valley State Prison in California on Wednesday. He was age 40. A spokesperson for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation says the death is being investigated as a possible suicide.
Phillips, had been in prison since 2008, when he was convicted on charges of domestic violence against a former girlfriend. In a separate case, we was found guilty of running his vehicle into a group of three teenagers.
At the time of his death, Phillips had been facing first-degree murder charges in a case involving a former cellmate who was found dead in the cell they shared. Phillips was awaiting trial on those charges, which could have led to his facing the death penalty.
Phillips was a member of the Nebraska Cornhuskers from 1993-1995. He played on the 1994 and 1995 squads that won back-to-back national titles. He later played in the NFL, NFL Europe, and the CFL.
