New-installed Rutgers head coach Chris Ash has added a key member of his coaching staff. SI.com  has reported that Houston receivers coach Drew Mehringer has been hired to become The Scarlet Knights new offensive coordinator.

Mehringer has been described by SI.com's Pete Thamel as "top protégé of Houston head coach Tom Herman." A former Rice quarterback, Mehringer served a student assistant under then Rice OC and QB coach Herman after injuries cut short his playing career. When Herman became OC at Iowa State, Mehringer followed there, serving as a graduate assistant. He did the same when Herman became OC at Ohio State.

James Madison hired Mehringer as a co-OC and QB coach in 2014. He left a year later to join Herman's coaching staff at Houston.

In an interview with SI.com, Ash described Mehringer as "is a rising star in the profession."
