What can be more American than an Elvis impersonator? How about a masked Elvis impersonator? Orion: the Man Who Would Be King tells the story of Jimmy Bell a.k.a. Jimmy Ellis, who became part of a scheme that helped to inspire the "Elvis is Alive" conspiracy theory.

The documentary tells how Ellis, a male singer with a voice that strongly resembled Elvis, became entangled in a scheme to exploit the mania surrounding The King of Rock And Roll's death in 1977 by having him don a mask and taking on the name Orion. Early publicity and records cloyingly played with the idea that Orion may have actually been Elvis himself, having faked his own death and taking on a new identity.

Sadly, Ellis was killed in 1998 during a robbery attempt at a pawn shop that he owned in Alabama. He was 53 years old at the time of his death.

The documentary has gotten good reviews. It has an 89% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and was awarded the Discovery Award by the British Independent Film Awards on Dec. 6.
