Pete Thamel vs. Texas.

Texas head football coach Mack Brown.

Pete Thamel has found a new target. Following in the footsteps of the universally derided and discredited five-part Sports Illustrated expose of Oklahoma State, Thamel heads to Austin, Tx. to take aim at the Texas Longhorns. Luckily for everyone involved (including the reader), Thayer Evans was left behind this time.

Thamel's latest Sports Illustrated piece looks at the reasons behind the decline of the Texas football, men's basketball, and baseball programs. It also looks at a power struggle between University of Texas president William Powers, Jr. and Texas Governor Rick Perry, which makes an unstable situation within the Longhorn athletic program even more unstable.

Naturally, the  biggest chunk of the article naturally looks at the decline of the once-proud Texas football program, which went from being the last non-SEC school to win the BCS title game in 2006, to losing to BYU and Ole Miss this season. Longhorn head football coach Mack Brown, whose fate could be decided with a loss this weekend to Oklahoma in the Red River Shootout. It would be the Longhorns' fourth loss in a row to the Sooners.

Luckily for Texas, Sports Illustrated decided to put Kansas basketball freshman phenom Andrew Wiggins on the cover of the next issue of the magazine. Which means that the Longhorns won't have to deal with the SI cover jinx going into Saturday's game against Oklahoma.
