The Big East to get bigger, but less East-ier?

Like the Big 12 before it, the Big East just isn't ready to go gentle into that dark night. Big East Commissioner John Marinatto announced that the presidents of the conference's member schools have met and agreed to extend invitations to other schools, either as full of football-only members.

"Our Presidents voted unanimously to extend invitations to specific institutions, including both football-only and all-sport members to join the BIG EAST Conference. I will be speaking to representatives of those schools shortly and look forward to announcing with them their acceptance into the BIG EAST. The addition of these members will extend our reach, bring us to exciting new markets, strengthen our status within the BCS, and lay the foundation for possible further expansion, all while maintaining the high quality and standards our Conference is known for. "

While there is no official word yet of which schools will be invited to join, speculation is that the list of candidate schools include Boise State, Houston, Air Force, SMU, and Central Florida. Which would give the Big East a more western-looking conference than an eastern-looking one. Then again, with the Big 12 poaching West Virginia from the Big East ranks, it seems somewhat appropriate.
