Jim McElwain is an ex-Florida head coach.

ESPN is now confirming reports that Florida has fired head football coach Jim McElwain.

The Mothership's Ed Aschoff and Mark Schlabach report the firing took place due to unsubstantiated claims by McElwain that his family and members of the Gators football team had received death threats during the week leading up to Florida's 42-7 loss to Georgia on Oct. 28.

ESPN reports that Florida defense coordinator Randy Shannon has been tapped by the school to serve as interim head coach for the remainder of the season.

Florida currently has a 3-4 overall record this season, with a 3-3 conference record.
