2017 Mountain West Bowl Eligibility Watch - Post Week 3

2017 Bowl Eligibility Watch - Mountain West

There are only four Mountain West schools with a winning record following Week 3 of the college football season. Expect that number to rise as conference play begins.

The big story as of now seems to be whether San Diego State will be able to clinch the College Football Playoff golden ticket to represent the Group of 5 conferences in one of the New Years Six bowls. CBS Sports' Jerry Palm and ESPN's David M. Hale are currently projecting the Aztecs to accomplish this.

Here is the current list of MW teams that are either halfway or one-third of the way to bowl eligibility. Unless otherwise noted, projections are via Jason Kirk of SB*Nation

3-0 (Three wins away for bowl eligibility)

San Diego State

Bowl projection: 2017 Las Vegas Bowl (Dec. 16, Las Vegas, Nv.)

Projected opponent: Washington St.

The Las Vegas Bowl has a Mountain West vs. Pac-12 tie-in. Usually it's the MW conference champion that lands here, unless it gets the golden ticket to represent the Group of Five conferences in the New Year's Six bowls.

As of right now, undefeated San Diego St. is in the running for that G5 golden ticket. Jerry Palm projects the Aztecs as facing Washington in the 2017 Fiesta Bowl in Glendale, Az., while David M. Hale projects the Aztecs as going to the 2018 Peach Bowl, facing Georgia in Atlanta.

2-1 (Four wins away from bowl eligibility)

Boise State

Bowl projection: 2017 Idaho Potato Bowl (Dec. 22, Boise, Idaho)

Projected opponent: Northern Illinois

Bowl projection: 2017 Hawai'i Bowl (Dec. 24, Honolulu, Hawai'i)

Projected opponent: SMU

2-2 (Four wins away for bowl eligibility)

Colorado State

Bowl projection: 2017 New Mexico Bowl (Dec. 16, Albuquerque, NM)

Projected opponent: Western Kentucky
