Michigan athletic department admits to paying for "Go Blue" skywritten above Michigan St. stadium.

The University of Michigan athletic department has confessed that it was responsible for the "Go Blue" skywriting that appeared above the stadium of in-state rival Michigan State before the Spartans' home game on Saturday. What Michigan is not admitting to, however, is actually targeting Spartan Stadium for a stunt that would be more expected to be from a Michigan alum with an large amount of money and a set of mixed priorities.

Michigan assistant athletic director Dave Ablauf says that skywriters were hired to "to canvas southeast Michigan with slogans and numbers prior to our game last Saturday," but that the department " didn’t target locations."

That's not what Suzanne Asbury-Oliver, co-owner of OregonAero SkyDancer told The Detroit Free Press. She claims the company was hired to write "Go Blue" over the Lansing, MI area.

“Just Lansing — they didn’t say East Lansing,” she said. “I think that was mid-morning on Saturday. They wanted our last writing to be right before kickoff for their game, which was noon (in Ann Arbor). So I think we were 10 o’clock or something over there.”

She said the request didn’t specifically say “Spartan Stadium,” although skywriting typically can be seen for 20 miles.

“It’s just, ‘Here’s a list of what we want written’ and target times and target places,” Asbury-Oliver said today from an air show in Owensboro, Ky. “As I understand it, they were trying to get all the main arteries into their home game.”

The Michigan athletic department reportedly contacted their Michigan St. counterparts to say that Spartan Stadium wasn't targeted. The incident coincided with Michigan State's home game against Youngstown State, which the Spartans won 55-17.

Michigan plays Michigan St. at Spartan Stadium in East Lansing on Nov. 2.
